My Mother, Father and five brothers and four sisters went north from Missouri to Washington State during the big depression in 1936. I was the baby at that time. I ended up in the Children’s Hospital in 1938 in Washington for six and a half years. My mother and dad had two other children while I was hospitalized. All the years I was in the hospital, my folks visited me about four or five times. There were no freeways. Times were hard and they were very poor.
I was introduced to poetry when I was in an English class in the seventh grade. There was a contest for poetry and everyone had to cooperate. I tied with another boy who came from another class in the school. The two of us had to write another poem. After winning, it encouraged me to keep writing. That’s why I write, smile, laugh and try my best. My poems reflect my personality.
